Clothing Essentials

• Light layers: Pack lightweight t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and a breathable fleece. Mornings on safari or near the coast can be very chilly, while afternoons get hot. 
• Neutral colors: Stick to khaki, beige, olive green, and grey if you are going on a safari. Avoid bright colors, white (gets dirty instantly), and dark blue or black (which attract biting tsetse flies). 
• Windproof jacket: Essential for breezy coastal cities like Cape Town or open-top safari vehicles. 
• Smart-casual outfit: Bring a nicer outfit for dinners in Cape Town or Johannesburg, as South Africans dress up for fine dining. 
• Swimwear:  It will be warm enough to swim in October.

Footwear

• Comfortable walking shoes: Bring broken-in sneakers or light hiking shoes for walking tours and bush walks.
• Casual sandals: Perfect for daytime exploring and relaxing at your accommodation.

In October, Cape Town is in brisk spring (highs around 21°C/70°F, but very windy), 

Johannesburg is mild with occasional afternoon thunderstorms, Hoedspruit (Kruger safari area) is hot and subtropical, and Victoria Falls hits its peak dry season heat (often exceeding 35°C/95°F).  Use the following destination guide.

🏙️ Cape Town & Johannesburg (Mild, Breezy & Cosmopolitan)

• Windproof Jacket / Shell: Essential for Cape Town's famous "South Easter" wind, especially if riding the Table Mountain Cableway or visiting Cape Point.
• Jeans and Long Trousers: Cape Town evenings drop to 10°C (50°F); you will want full-length pants for dinners.
• Compact Umbrella / Poncho: Johannesburg gets sudden, heavy afternoon thundershowers.
• Smart Casual Attire: Both cities boast world-class dining. Pack a nice dress, collared shirt, or blazer for evenings out.
  

🦁 Hoedspruit Safari (Chilly Mornings, Hot Subtropical Days)

• Warm Fleece, Beanie, & Scarf: Open-air game drives at 5:30 AM are freezing. You will want heavy layers that you can shed as the sun rises.
• Safari Neutrals: Pack khaki, olive green, or tan linen shirts and trousers. Avoid white, black, and dark blue.
• Sturdy Trail Sneakers: Ideal for bush walks or navigating unpaved lodge pathways.  

🌊 Victoria Falls (Intense Tropical Heat & Heavy Mist)

• Ultra-Lightweight Clothing: Breathable linens, moisture-wicking activewear, and shorts are a must for the oppressive October heat.
• Waterproof Phone Pouch & Poncho: Even in the dry season, the mist at the Victoria Falls Rainforest can drench you and your electronics instantly.
• Water Shoes / Strap-on Sandals: The walkways around the falls are slippery and permanently wet.
